2025 BMW M SERIES

High-Performance Luxury Redefined.

Bavarian Motor Works has been at the forefront of the automotive industry for decades. They've contributed to the sector in countless ways, but one stands above all. In 1972, the BMW Racing Division decided to bring racetrack-ready vehicles to the general public for the first time. And just like that, the  BMW M lineup, M standing for Motorsport, was born.

Fast-forward to 2025, and the M class represents BMW vehicles that perfectly blend motorsport performance with everyday luxury. Here at Grayson BMW in Knoxville, we invite you to test drive, buy, or lease one of these high-performance vehicles. The only problem is there are so many to choose from! It's a good problem to have.

As part of our Research Hub, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about the BMW M series.

Explore the BMW M Models.

Let's begin by looking at the various models available in the M Series. These range wildly in terms of capability, price, and style.

You have your sedan daily drivers, stylish coupes and convertibles, and versatile SUVs. Within those body types, we find High-Performance models, which are the track-ready versions, Electrified options that work entirely or partly on battery power, and Performance models, which offer a more affordable and slightly less powerful alternative.

M Sedans.

The BMW sedan is the most traditional type of BMW, ideal for day-to-day driving in style. It has the best of both worlds. More space than a coupe and more nimble than an SUV. Although BMW's SUVs are overtaking the sedans in terms of units sold, there's no denying the importance of the sedan in the company's history.

High-Performance Models.

There are only two models in the highest-performing sedans category. Surprising though it may be, the fastest BMW of the entire lineup is a Sedan. We're talking about the M8 Competition Gran Coupe. As you settle into the Full Merino Leather seats with Sakhir Orange Alcantara Cloth, you can engage the 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine. With 617 horsepower, it takes you from 0-60 in 3 seconds flat.

Then there's the BMW M3 for sale, one of the more popular models at BMW of Louisville. It is essentially a supercharged version of the BMW 3 Series. It retains the 3 Series DNA, meaning it has a relatively compact body and excellent handling. It does look sportier with M accents, but there's no mistaking it: it's a 3 Series.

The 6-cylinder BMW M TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine takes you from 0-60 in only 4.1 seconds. There is also the M3 Competition xDrive Sedan that cuts this time down to a blistering-fast 3.4 seconds.

Electrified Models.

Although there aren't many high-performance sedans, there are plenty of electric ones. In fact, the majority of BMW's electric vehicles are sedans. The i4 M50 and i5 M60 are some of the more popular models because they represent the most affordable entry-level to electric BMW ownership, starting under $90,000. But even with the price tag, they benefit from the instant electric torque, both having 0-60 times of 3.7 seconds.

If you want to step things up a notch, you can opt for the M5 sedan. Its M Hybrid powertrain combines the M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine with an electric drive, and it can go all-electric for 25 miles. There's also the M5 Touring, which is technically a hatchback that shares the M5's 717 horsepower but with more cargo space.

Finally, the i7 M70 Sedan is the most luxurious electric model. It has an executive style with interior features like heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, even in the rear for those who get chauffeured around. Powered by dual motors, it has a range of 268 to 285 miles.

Performance Models.

If you want a balance between price and performance, you'll want one of these vehicles. For example, the M235 xDrive Gran Coupe is a sportier version of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. If you prefer the 3 Series, you can opt for the M340i Sedan with or without xDrive.

The M440i Gran Coupe is also available with xDrive, providing 386 horsepower and a bit more luxury. The 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder has a sound like no other. At the higher end, you have the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, which looks great with exclusive 20-inch M wheels and an upscale interior.

M Coupes & Convertibles.

One word comes to mind when we think of BMW coupes and convertibles: fun.

M Coupes and Convertibles are the fashion icons of the BMW lineup, and they have unmatched designs and exhilarating performances.

High-Performance Models.

It's only right that we start this with the most iconic coupe of all, the M2. As part of the 2 Series, it has coupé in its DNA. Performance comes from this year's increased torque of 443 lb-ft with the available 8-speed Sport transmission.

For even more power and luxury, you should look at the M4. It has a Competition xDrive with 523 horsepower and can go 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. We also find our first convertible, the M4 Competition Convertible xDrive. This year, the M4 CS Edition VR46 will also be seen. Created in partnership with racing legend Valentino Rossi, it has a "46" logo on the side and bright accents throughout.

Another interesting convertible is the M8 Competition Convertible, the most luxurious (and expensive) gas-powered BMW on the road today. It falls 0.1 seconds short of the 3.0-second record held by the sedan but makes up for it with its luxury interior and power soft top engineered to reduce outside noise.

Performance Models.

The highlight of this section would have to be the Z4 M40i Roadster, an iconic vehicle with a style like no other. It's known for its compact design and is a two-seater that comes standard as a convertible. The M850i xDrive Coupe also has a convertible model with 523 horsepower and sub-4 second 0-60 times.!

For more affordable options, you can look at the M240i Coupe and the M440i Coupe. Both are available with or without xDrive, and the M440i also has a Convertible option. The 2 Series is ever so slightly faster than the 4 Series but has less luxury inside the cabin and a bit more room.

M Sports Activity Vehicles (SUVs).

The BMW M SUV is the embodiment of the modern vehicle. It has the versatility you need to tackle any adventure in style and plenty of room for all of your passengers and their belongings.

BMW has an incredible array of SUVs, many of which are part of the M family. Let's take a look.

High-Performance Models.

You usually don't equate SUVs to speed, but in the case of these models, you can. They handle like a sedan! Despite its name, the X4 M Coupe is a 4-door SUV that can rocket from 0-60 in 3.9s. It does so thanks to the 503 hp provided by its 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine.

The X5 M ups the ante to 617 horsepower and shaves 0.2 seconds off the 0-60 time. It is also significantly larger than the M4 and exits the compact SUV category to be considered mid-sized. Then we have the X6 M, which has the same power specs as the X5 but brings back the coupé look. A dramatic cut to the roofline gives it a much sportier appearance. You'll also love the aggressive headlights, wheels, and overall shape.

Electrified Models.

The iX M70 is the first-ever all-electric BMW SUV, and it's back this year with a range of 283 to 303 miles. The design is modern and screams electric from every angle.

As for the XM models, they run on a 4.4-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo V-8 engine paired with a high-performance electric motor. The design is as aggressive as can be. It has a boxier shape, vertical quad exhausts, and 23-inch BMW M wheels.

If the XM's 644 maximum horsepower isn't enough for you, there's also the XM Label that tops out at 738 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. This incredible power takes it from 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and gives it the title of the most powerful BMW SUV ever assembled.

Models:
  • iX M70 SUV
  • XM SUV
  • XM Label SUV

Performance Models.

This is the most plentiful category we've seen yet. The lineup starts with the X1 M35i, the most affordable entry point to M SUV ownership. The 313 horsepower takes it from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. The lineup then goes all the way up to X7, where we find the X7 M60i. As the largest BMW ever built, it has 90.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

  • X1 M35i SUV
  • X2 M35i Coupe SUV
  • X3 M50 xDrive SUV

Performance & Engineering.

All BMW models in the M series share some exciting performance and engineering features, no matter what size or style you choose. Of course, you often have the option of adding xDrive, BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive system, to help you handle even the most challenging road conditions. But that's not reserved for M vehicles. Let's look at what is M-exclusive.

Some models will pair their M engines with an M Sport transmission with Drivelogic. This 8-speed automatic has a variety of shift programs, so you can tailor your driving experience to your liking. The M Compound brakes with ventilated and drilled brake discs provide additional stopping power when zooming on the pavement.

We also find that the Adaptive M Suspension and the Active M Differential work together to improve handling on even the most challenging roads.

Interior & Technology.

The interior of an M series model also has subtle cues that let you know that this is more than your average BMW. For instance, the M steering wheel has a red stripe at 12 o'clock and is wrapped in comfortable leather. You'll also enjoy the custom M Sport Seats, M Gear Shifter, and M pedals.

As for technology, you get unique M modes with these vehicles. Road mode for everyday driving, Sport for more performance, and Track to go all-out. Since performance is important to most M owners, you'll have plenty of ways to measure the capabilities of your vehicle. The M head-up display and M Digital Instrument Cluster are finely-tuned to showcase things like lap times and G-forces.

You can also adjust steering response, M pedal feel, and more to customize your driving experience.

Design & Styling.

Motorsport vehicles are unmistakable on the road. They have unique design elements that make them stand out, such as the Bavarian Blue, Red, and Purple M logos sprinkled throughout the exterior.

The M Double-Slat Kidney Grille and M Quad Exhaust Pipes give these vehicles an aggressive look that turns heads wherever you go. And the M forged wheels not only look sporty but also help with weight reduction for improved performance.

The BMW M Driving Experience.

In order to make the most of your new BMW M vehicle, you need to understand how it drives and what sets it apart from other BMW models. Its unchained horses often prove to be a lot for new drivers. One way to get more comfortable is through expert training.

The BMW M Driving Experience is a program offered by BMW that allows you to push your vehicle to its limits in a safe and controlled environment. Learn to drift, brake, and accelerate like a pro under the guidance of experienced instructors.

Why Choose a BMW M?

The BMW M is more than any ordinary car. It's a precision-engineered machine that is designed to deliver an unparalleled driving experience. With its powerful engines, advanced technology, and sleek design, the 2025 BMW M series mixes luxury and performance as none of its competitors can.
