The BMW X2 Continues to Uphold Its Zippy Reputation
Small and highly maneuverable, the BMW X2 has quickly elevated itself in the increasingly competitive subcompact luxury crossover field within the first few years. Combining four doors with an exterior design that blurs the line between SUV and coupe body styles, it's no wonder the X2 is dubbed a "Sports Activity Coupe." Knoxville-area residents have choices from sDrive28i, xDrive28i, and M35i trim levels.
Performance
Regardless of trim level, the BMW X2 comes with potent engine power. The sDrive28i and xDrive28i get a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 228 horsepower. As the performance-enhanced trim—with exclusives like M Sport exhaust components, larger disc brakes, and firmly tuned steering and suspension—the M35 gets an enhanced version of the engine, which produces 301 horsepower and helps the X2 achieve a 0-to-60 mph peak time of 4.7 seconds. (On the sDrive28i and xDrive28i, the 0-to-60 mph time is 6.6 seconds and 6.3 seconds, respectively.) The X2 engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission for ease of operation and smooth shifts. Although a subcompact, the BMW X2 can accommodate up to five adult passengers. Both rows of seats are dressed in synthetic leather, with eight-way power adjustability on the front seats and 60/40 split-folding ability on the rear seats to expand cargo space when needed. Technology
Headed by an 8.8-inch touchscreen, the iDrive system integrates the BMW X2's infotainment components. Although you can use the touchscreen to execute functions, BMW also provides a rotary knob and touchpad near the center console and buttons and knobs on the dashboard. iDrive includes Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay for integrating your iOS device functions, HD Radio for digital tuning, a seven-speaker AM/FM stereo system, a USB port to play music from mobile devices, and a navigation system. Remote keyless entry enables you to simply press the appropriate key fob button to gain access to the cabin, rather than relying on inserting an ignition key.
If you go with the M35, BMW upgrades the X2 with proximity keyless entry and push-button engine start. The former only requires you to have the key fob in your possession to unlock the doors. The latter jettisons the need to insert a key into an ignition lock to start the engine. Also added on the M35 is a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio.
Safety
The BMW X2 is loaded with driver-assistance features so that you increase your chances of being involved in a crash. Such features include forward collision warning and low-speed automatic emergency braking to help avoid front-end crashes and lane departure warning to alert you when you cross the markings of your intended lane of travel without signaling. There is also road sign recognition to anticipate better traffic signs and automatic high-beam technology to optimize your ability to see during low-visibility driving situations. Also included is a rearview camera, which activates a video image of what's behind you when moving in reverse. Accompanying the rearview camera are rear parking sensors to serve as aural alerts when getting too close to bumping into something (or someone). In the event of a crash, however, the X2 includes seven airbags-a driver's airbag, two frontal impact airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtains-to deploy when necessary.
