Gas-Powered.

You can never go wrong with the classics. In the case of a BMW 4 Series, that means a good old gasoline-powered engine. These models deliver that roaring signature sound we know and love.

There are three distinct gas-powered options in the 4 Series family that we'll cover in detail. Each offers its own unique blend of performance, style, and features to suit different driving preferences.

4 Series Coupe.

Originally, the 4 Series, like all even numbers in the BMW lineup, was known for being a coupe only. These models represent the true essence of what makes the 4 Series special with their sleek two-door design and athletic stance.

One of the crowd favorites is the M440i, which has the most powerful engine in the gas lineup. This beast comes equipped with a 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine that propels you from 0-60 in just 4.2 seconds. With 386 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque at your disposal, every drive becomes an exhilarating experience.

If you're looking to save a few bucks and don't need all that power, there's always the 430i. This model is essentially the same as the M440i minus the beast of an engine. The 430i comes with a smaller 2.0-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers a respectable 255 hp. With it, you can go 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

Both these models share many other features. They are available in either rear-wheel drive or with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. From a design standpoint, they both adopt the new BMW kidney grille with a high-gloss black frame. You also have the choice between 18 or 19-inch wheels, with the bigger ones often found on the 440i. It's worth noting that there is seating for only four people, including the driver.

4 Series Gran Coupe.

The Gran Coupe takes everything that was great about what we just saw and adds more doors, space, and functionality. This is the largest gas-powered 4-series. Inside, you'll have the most headroom and legroom for up to 5 adult passengers. From a design standpoint, the two extra doors give it a more executive look.

And just as an executive vehicle should, the Gran Coupe comes with loads of technology. The BMW Curved Display features a configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 14.9-inch central information display that creates one long, continuous screen. These run on the latest BMW Operating System 8.5. You can also use the smart BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

As if that wasn't enough screen time, you also get a BMW Head-Up Display that projects essential driving information directly onto the windshield. The ambient lighting system adds a customizable ambiance to the interior. The seats can be outfitted with comfortable Black Vernasca Leather with Red Highlight, and the two-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters puts you in command of the same 255 horsepower as the 430i.

4 Series Convertible.

The 4 Series Convertible is ideal for those who want to ride in style. Once you get inside, ideally with the BMW Digital Key, you're greeted with the same comfortable cabin as the 430i and M440i models. In fact, they are pretty much identical in every other way except that the convertible roof slows these models down by a few milliseconds when accelerating.

Once inside, you can remove the tailored soft top that can be raised or lowered in approximately 10 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. You can also get a black carbon fiber trim inside for a more sporty feel. The rest of the exterior resembles the coupe with two-door sports convertible styling and coupe-inspired curves.

The style is improved further by the choice of colors you have, such as Alpine White, Arctic Race Blue Metallic, Cape York Green Metallic, and Black Sapphire Metallic.

Electric.

You've likely seen more and more electric vehicles riding on the streets of Morristown. This type of car doesn't use traditional gas engines but rather batteries that propel the vehicle with zero emissions. Another thing to note is that with instant torque, these vehicles are often performance beasts. As you can imagine, BMW is at the forefront of this revolution.

BMW has plenty of electric models across its lineup, but the Series 4 only has one: the i4 Grand Coupe.

i4 Gran Coupe.

It's important to note that all the models we saw so far do have some form of electrification. One BMW hybrid powertrain technology is called the 48V Mild Hybrid technology, and it delivers some power to the gas engine. But the i4's setup is completely electric. It sports two high-performance electric motors and a high-voltage battery pack that turns the wheels. You can choose to go either with eDrive40 (rear-wheel drive) or the M50 (xDrive).

With the M50, you get 536 horses that rocket you from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. The eDrive40 gets a bit less horsepower at 335 and goes 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. Don't worry about the logistics of charging your vehicle because it comes fully equipped. You can use the Flexible Fast Charger or the BMW Wallbox at home. You can also find public stations with the My BMW App.

You can expect roughly 300 miles of fully electric range with the eDrive. You have two Energy Recuperation Modes, also known as regenerative braking, that you can set to maximize efficiency.

M.

Finally, we have the speed demons, developed by BMW's Motorsport division for maximum power. These track-ready models give you the most horsepower and features that make driving safer and more efficient.

M4 Coupe.

The BMW M4 is the fastest BMW 4 Series. The BMW M4 CS gets 543 horsepower and goes 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. It is mostly powered by the BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder engine. For that speed, you'll need to get the M4 Competition xDrive Coupe.

It is paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic Sport Transmission with a choice of automatic or manual. You can make it instantly recognizable with exclusive colors like Sao Paulo Yellow and Toronto Red.

The interior includes performance-specific features like M Drift Analyzer, M Traction Control, and M Laptimer. You can also enjoy Merino Leather upholstery with bright red CS lettering and bold bi-color M Carbon Bucket Seats.

M4 Convertible

Much like the other convertible we saw, this M4 convertible is essentially the same as the M4 but comes with a convertible roof. It has been engineered to reduce drag and can still do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, making it even faster than the electric i4.

The M Carbon Bucket Seats feature an illuminated M badge and sporty carbon accents. The M Alcantara Steering Wheel is also available. The M-specific instrument cluster on the BMW M4 xDrive Competition Convertible provides all the performance data you need at a glance.

Frequently Asked Questions.

The 4 Series has a more sporty appearance, especially the two-door coupes. The lower stance and wider body give it a more aggressive look compared to the 3 Series. It's also more luxurious because there is no convertible 3 Series, making the 4 Series the only option if you want open-air driving in this size category.
There are plenty of fast options to choose from, but the fastest is the M4 Competition xDrive Coupe with a 0-60 time of 3.4 seconds. Not far behind is the i4, which has a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds, but it's worth considering for the wholly new driving experience that electric power provides.
Depending on the trim level, there are over 15 factory colors, but with BMW Individual, you can create endless combinations.
