WHAT'S NEW FOR 2027.

BMW i3 for 2027 is an entirely new vehicle. It does not carry over from a prior-year model. Built as the first fully electric member of the BMW 3 Series family and the second Neue Klasse model, it brings the Neue Klasse platform to the sedan segment and introduces a new generation of BMW electric technology.

The most significant headline is the projected range: up to 440 miles on a full charge, based on preliminary BMW AG tests conducted using EPA test procedure standards. EPA fuel economy methodology That figure represents a 30 percent improvement over Gen5 BMW eDrive technology. Peak DC fast charging capacity reaches 400 kW through the 800V architecture.

Beyond range and charging, BMW i3 for 2027 introduces:

  • BMW Panoramic Vision, a pillar-to-pillar windshield display that projects driving information without a cockpit instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.
  • The Heart of Joy high-performance processor, one of four onboard superbrains, responding ten times faster than previous BMW systems.
  • BMW Operating System X, built on the Android Open Source Project for continuous over-the-air update capability.
  • Bidirectional charging with Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid functionality.
  • NACS charge port as standard, with a CCS adapter included for access to additional networks.

This is not a refresh. It is a ground-up architecture that redefines what the BMW 3 Series represents.

PERFORMANCE AND POWERTRAIN.

BMW i3 50 xDrive runs on two electric motors using two different technologies working in coordination.

At the rear axle sits an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM). This is the primary drive unit and a core piece of the Gen6 platform. Unlike motors using permanent magnets, the EESM regulates its magnetic field flexibly, reducing losses at low load and producing stronger magnetic fields under high demand. The result is high torque and consistent power output across the full motor speed range.

At the front axle, an asynchronous motor (ASM) operates on the induction principle. Its rotor uses aluminium rods and short-circuit rings rather than magnets, making it compact, lightweight, and resistant to heat. The combination of EESM and ASM reduces energy losses by 40 percent, cuts drive system weight by ten percent, and reduces manufacturing costs by 20 percent compared with the prior generation.

Combined output is 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque, sent to all four wheels through a single-speed direct drive.

The Gen6 high-voltage battery uses new cylindrical cells measuring 46 mm in diameter and 95 mm in height, with 20 percent greater volumetric energy density than the prismatic cells in Gen5. A cell-to-pack design eliminates modular construction, allowing the battery pack to function as a structural underbody component. This lowers the center of gravity and improves torsional rigidity, which directly benefits handling dynamics.

Estimated range is up to 440 miles. Actual range varies depending on driving conditions, temperature, wheel selection, and other factors. Ranges for newly launched model-year vehicles may not yet carry full EPA certification.

DC fast charging peaks at 400 kW. BMW i3 also supports bidirectional charging: Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) can power external devices up to 3.7 kW, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) works with a compatible BMW Wallbox Professional and a photovoltaic system to reduce household energy costs, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) allows the vehicle to feed energy back into the public grid.

The suspension uses stroke-dependent shock absorbers, a two-joint spring strut front axle, and a new five-link rear axle. Front and rear anti-roll bars with highly preloaded bearings are standard. Optional Adaptive M Suspension is available for drivers who want more dynamic calibration.

BMW Dynamic Performance Control and the Heart of Joy processor manage all drive, braking, steering, and recuperation functions. The Soft-Stop system ensures smooth deceleration without jerk or braking noise in everyday driving.

INTERIOR, COMFORT, AND CARGO.

BMW i3 for 2027 seats five in a driver-focused cabin that applies the Neue Klasse design language at full intensity.

The instrument panel flows horizontally into the door panels on both sides, creating a wrap-around effect. The central display angles slightly toward the driver. A panoramic roof with climate comfort glass is standard, and large window areas add a sense of open space. Ambient lighting runs throughout the cabin and is coordinated with display graphics and BMW Panoramic Vision.

The standard steering wheel is redesigned with a center spoke in the upper section, a first for the BMW 3 Series. Thumb rests improve ergonomics, and multifunction buttons allow control of key functions without removing hands from the wheel. An optional M Sport steering wheel with a flattened design and spokes at the four and eight o'clock positions is available.

Seats are sporty and supportive with secure lateral bolstering. Optional multifunction seats and optional BMW M Sport seats with more pronounced side bolsters are available for drivers who want additional support during spirited driving.

BMW ConnectedDrive features

SAFETY AND DRIVER ASSISTANCE.

BMW i3 for 2027 launches with a standard suite of driver assistance systems under the BMW Symbiotic Drive philosophy. The goal is seamless cooperation between driver and system rather than maximum automation in isolation.

Standard systems include:

  • Lane Departure Warning, adaptive and capable of learning from individual driver behavior. The system reads steering inputs and driver gaze direction to distinguish intentional lane changes from unintentional drift before issuing a warning or correction.
  • Driving Assistant Plus, which manages speed, following distance, and lane centering simultaneously. It reads posted speed limits and adjusts speed proactively before curves, roundabouts, and turns.

This combination constitutes Level two automated driving capability, handling braking, acceleration, and lane centering management simultaneously while the driver remains engaged.

Available system:

  • Level two plus automated driving, available as an optional upgrade. This system allows the driver to apply acceleration, braking, or steering inputs while driver assistance remains active, without instantly triggering a deactivation. The BMW Symbiotic Drive logic interprets driver intent and adjusts accordingly.

All driver and parking assistance functions can also be activated through the BMW ConnectedDrive Store after purchase.

The Heart of Joy processor directly supports safety outcomes: its ten-times-faster response rate reduces the number of correction interventions needed in cornering, producing more predictable handling behavior.

WHO IT'S FOR.

BMW i3 for 2027 is built for drivers who want the performance character and design of a BMW sports sedan without a combustion engine. The projected range of up to 440 miles addresses one of the primary concerns associated with long-distance EV driving. The 400 kW DC fast charging peak provides high-power charging capability for drivers who use compatible stations.

Compared with any prior BMW 3 Series, BMW i3 50 xDrive offers more power than prior BMW 3 Series four-cylinder models, a completely new display architecture, and charging capability that no previous BMW 3 Series has offered. It is not an evolution of the BMW 3 Series. It is a reinvention of it.

For buyers near Knoxville who have been waiting for a fully electric sedan with genuine sports sedan handling, a driver-focused interior, and the range to handle road trips, BMW i3 represents a significant addition to the current generation of BMW vehicles.
