Those who value luxury, high performance, and innovation turn to new BMW models. It's a no-brainer. The automaker envisions a future where efficiency also joins that list of characteristics. That's why they are working to bring a plug-in hybrid to every model they make, and the first one could be set for production and arrival soon.

The BMW X5 crossover is set for a plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV). We've seen the concept before at auto shows, and discussed in it detail here on our blog before, but we figure a good refresher on the details is needed.

The model takes a four-cylinder engine option and pairs it with a 70 kW electric motor. This allows the vehicle to perform like many other BMW options, as the X5 PHEV can go from zero-to-sixty in less than seven seconds. In all-electric mode, the vehicle can run for 18.6 miles at speeds up to 75 miles per hour. As for fuel economy? Well, right now, the EPA hasn't handed down official numbers, but in Europe, the model tested at 62 miles per gallon. BMW is hoping it is close to that here in America.

Right now, the one thing keeping the X5 plug-in from production is the lithium-ion battery pack. BMW wants to make sure that it performs and doesn't sacrifice the versatility and many other standout features of the X5, so they are continuing to work on making that possible. It appears, however, that they are close.

When that day comes, we'll let you know. Until then, stop in to Grayson BMW during regular business hours. Our team here in Knoxville, TN can answer any questions, and provide details on models you'd like to learn more about.
