BMW's latest of its flagship project of producing luxury crossover SUV's has seen the launch of the 2012 X5 BMW, a car with generous features, powerful engines and A list on set of on-road credentials. The California team of engineers had an easier task with responding to the ever demanding motoring industry of new designs ever year. The task was more of a complimentary one with some previous optional features found in the X5 2011 becoming standard features for 2012's X5 series. BMW can afford to grow modestly having worked hard to build the sporty driving dynamics and high-level response mechanisms that have made the X5 a versatile car, well-placed at the top of its class.

The X5 has the following five trim levels of engines; xDrive 35i, xDrive35i Premium, xDrive35i Sport Activity, xDrive35d and xDrive50i- the xDrive indicating the engine version. All X5 models have the all wheel drive as a standard feature but with variations in the different engine versions. The xDrive 35i is powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-6 engine that produces 300 horsepower and a 300 pound-feet of torque. According to the Auto blog website the 35i can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, not a bad performance for a midsize luxury SUV car.

For motorists who exude power in their car engines, the X5 xDrive50i engine version has a twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8 system that produces 400 horsepower and a robust 450 pound-feet of torque. It will do the zero to 60 mph run in 5.3 seconds -1.3 seconds faster than the baseline engine(X5 xDrive 35i). It is a better fuel consumer as well registering 14 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 19 mpg in combined driving compared to the xDrive's35i 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 19 mpg in combined driving.

The X5 xDrive50i features a 3.0 litre inline turbo diesel that registers 265 of horsepower capacity and 425 pound-feet of torque. According to Auto blog it registers a zero to 60 mph run in 7.2 seconds, a longer time threshold than other versions but with its clean diesel technology, it returns an estimated fuel economy of 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway/22 mpg in combined driving. It is no doubt the best in fuel ergonomics and a good choice with international fuel prices now escalating to all time highs.
