The M Coupe is a high-performance model of BMW's already-sporty 1 Series, and will sit at the top of the 1 Series line with a starting price of $47,010.

The M Coupe absorbs the chassis of the BMW M3 with the competition package, but it has been tuned specifically for the slightly smaller 1 Series-based M. It is wider, longer, and lower than the standard 1 Series coupe, but has the same wheelbase. During the transformation to M-spec, the car has lost about 77 pounds.

Unlike its M3 big brother, which uses a V8 engine, a twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 335 hp and 332 lb-ft torque powers the 1 Series M Coupe. The car has an overboost feature that can give it a temporary increase of 37 lb-ft of torque. BMW says the car will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, hit the standing quarter-mile in 13.2 seconds, and run to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The engine drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

Keeping all of this power under control are 14.2 inch front disc brakes that are vented and cross-drilled, with 13.8 inch discs in the rear.

What is new or notable? Like other high-performance BMWs, there is a steering wheel-mounted M Drive button that improves throttle response for even an even sportier driving experience.

Sure to be one of the most popular from the new 2012 line from BMW, the M Coupe will push the drivers head into the headrest while turning the heads of the drivers near by.
