It's been speculated, and now it's confirmed: BMW will build an X3-based Premium SUV called the X4. According to the UK's Autocar, the X4 will be a lower, stiffer, more agile four-seater, and could offer a three-door variant based on official sketches.
"Yes, we will position a BMW X4 above the X3," says Norbert Reithofer, BMW CEO.
Visually, the X4 will be to the X3 what the X6 is the X5: a premium, metro cruiser short on SUV functionality, but high on style. It will also be driven, like the X3, by all four wheels. The exact engine options are not yet known, but figure they'll mirror those seen in the X3, for the US, anyway. Down the line, BMW is expected to also have a high-performance X4 M, possibly with a new twin-turbo V-6 and six-speed manual transmission.
These features, including the addition of seven- and eight-speed automatic transmissions, figure to put the baby Bimmer square against the segment heavyweights like the Audi Q5 and the forthcoming Porshe Cajun. It's still too early for pricing and availability details, but we expect the X4 to slot above the X3?s $36,850 base price, not including taxes, and below the X5?s $47,200 base price.
