Anniversaries are always a fun time in the automotive industry, especially when you have a lineup as storied as BMW's. This year, we've learned that it’s the M5 performance sedan turns 30, and as the Bavarian automaker loves to do, will receive a special anniversary edition.

Over the last 30 years, the M5 sedan has never lacked for much when it comes to power. When it was first introduced, the model boasted a 3.5L inline-six with 252 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. This has increased to the current iteration, which features an astronomical 560 ponies and 502 lb-ft from its 4.4L twin-turbo V8.

Since this is an anniversary model, we obviously expected the power numbers to grow a bit--and they have, by somewhat impressive proportions. While the 4.4L V8 will be retained, it has been refitted to deliver a rounded 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

These numbers don't just represent a jump in output, but a competitive edge against many of the M5's competitors.

In addition to the jump in numbers, the 30th anniversary M5 will come with the brand's Competition Package standard, and a 3.7 sprint time over the stock model's 4.2.

While only 30 examples of this model will be available in the U.S., you can still learn more about the M performance brand models and other new BMW models by swinging by our Knoxville, TN dealership and taking a look around.
